Music. In modern society no one thinks about the meaning of this word and its origin. It is just pronounced as any other words in man's life. However this word is unique and it began the existence twenty five centuries in the ancient town named Hellas. It formed in accordance with the appearance of mythological characters - Muses.Terpsichore was the patron of lyric poetry and dancing, Erato - the patron of erotic poetry or hymns, Euterpe - the patron of Music and poetry and the like. Muses gave a name to the familiar word 'museum'. In ancient Hellas this word served as a title of the cathedrals in which those graceful Muses had been living. Museum is truly a place where people meet the beauties and elegance. According to legend, Apollo was a popular leader of Muses. That time he had special names - Musaget and Muzaget. Ancient Greek sculptors represented Apollo-Musaget as a very strong man holding an instrument in his hand, for example, cithara - a string musical instrument that had been first invented by Apollo. During the prosperity of Hellas one more myth had been born - about Orpheus, one of the first musicians of antique with superhuman musical skills. Greek people considered him to be the patron of religious writings and magic music. Agreeing with the legend, once listening to Orpheus' wonderful sounds of lyre all the wild animals and birds became obedient and harmless as if they were children. When these sounds reached cliffs and trees, the cliffs moved apart and the trees bent their branches showing their humbleness. One day Orpheus descended the shadow land to save his beloved and started playing the golden lyre. The three headed dog Cerberus who was on guard at the gate of Tartars had fallen asleep; Erinyes, the goddess of revenge, burst into tears and Persen, the goddess of fertility, was deeply touched by his playing. The myth of Orpheus was the most popular in Greece due to the fact that Greek loved music alongside with other arts.
Music had a particular part in life - such arts as dancing, gymnastics, pantomime were followed by music. In ancient theater music was a necessary addition to the performance. Any tragedy or comics were followed by playing instruments and singing. Much of those things have come into modern trends of music. Lyre and flute were in demand with Greek. Lyre was popular because it allowed reciting poems and stage performances very well. As for flute, it was gone with aulos and trumpet when military parades or religious processions were happening. And besides, it was good for some kinds of holidays. Speaking of modern music, it should be mentioned that it is different from the ancient one. There is great variety of modern music actually: rock, jazz, blues, pop-music and so on.
